“I know firsthand what it’s like to walk miles barefoot just to sit on a broken desk in a leaking classroom,” says Bangura. “No child should still face that today.”

Empowering Futures: Rebuilding Schools, Providing Hope in Africa

Millions of kids across Africa dream of an education, but far too often, their potential remains untapped. Many learn in dilapidated classrooms, under trees, or without basic necessities like desks, blackboards, pens, pencils, and paper. Teachers eager to teach, often lack even chalk or essential supplies, relying on worn-out textbooks.

This stark reality is reflected in alarming statistic:

  • “Sub-Saharan Africa has the single largest number -202 million – of children and adolescents who are not learning,” says Sylvia Montoya, Director of the UNESCO Institute for statistics.
  • In Sierra Leone, a country we deeply focus on, only 48.64% of the population aged 15 and older can read and write with some understanding (World Bank).

These aren’t just numbers; they represent millions of unfulfilled dreams and lost opportunities. Schools for Africa is dedicated to transforming these challenges into opportunities, one school at a time.

Our Mission

Schools for Africa is committed to transforming lives and communities through the power of education in Sierra Leone. We achieve this by:

  • Building and improving school infrastructure
  • Providing essential learning resources
  • Supporting vibrant educational environment

We primarily focus on neglected rural regions, collaborating closely with local communities to create sustainable educational opportunities that empower children to thrive throughout the country. Please see our latest activities to learn where your support is going.

We are here to help!

Together, we can turn bare classrooms into places of hope, brick by brick, desk by desk, child by child.

We know the challenges of rebuilding hope where resources are scarce. But we also know that when good people come together, amazing things can happen.
What Abu and the Government Secondary School Madina community are doing is more than just fixing old buildings, they’re giving children the chance to learn in safety and dignity, and teaching the next generation skills they’ll carry for life.

To anyone reading this: your support matters. Whether you give, share, or pray, you are part of this story of resilience and hope. We stand with you and believe in this vision, because every child deserves a future that’s brighter than the one they were born into.”

Schools 4 Afrika - Abubakarr S. Bangura

This is not a charity project. It’s a blueprint for self-reliance,” says Bangura. “We’re investing in infrastructure, dignity, and futures.

Our latest activity

  • Completion of Operations Building: We need $28,000 for building materials and labor. This will allow us to finish the vital structure that will house our brick production hall, carpentry shop, welding and auto repair shops, and training facilities.
  • Mobile M7M1 Super Hydraform Brick-Making Machine: This machine costs $25,000, plus $6,000 for shipment. The diesel-powered machine is manufactured in South Africa, and it is specifically designed for remote areas without electricity. It can be driven directly to construction sites and boasts a production capacity of 2,400 bricks per day (made from a mixture of cement and clay). This will dramatically accelerate our construction efforts and allow us to sustainably produce bricks for ongoing school rehabilitations.
  • Two STIHL MS 881 Magnum 36-inch Chainsaw Machines: $4,638.98 at a unit cost of $2,319.99 each. The robust chainsaws are essential for logging timber to produce the vast amounts of school furniture we envision.
  • A Good Used Trailer Truck: We are looking at European trucks in the range of $35,000, plus 8,000 for shipping from Netherlands, or Germany. This truck is vital for efficiently transporting timber from logging sites and distributing bricks and finished furniture to the numerous schools in need across the region.
  • Customs: The typical customs at the Sierra Leone Ports Authority (SLPA) is 20% of the purchase price. Our expected customs bill for all 3 purchases is $13,582.

Every dollar will go directly toward equipment and construction costs that will bring this vision to life, brick by brick, desk by desk.
