“I know firsthand what it’s like to walk miles barefoot just to sit on a broken desk in a leaking classroom,” says Bangura. “No child should still face that today.”

Building a Better Tomorrow: Explore Our Proposals and How We can Partner For Impact

At Schools 4Africa, innovation is at the heart of what we do. This page is dedicated to offering our latest proposals for new programs, initiatives, and strategic partnerships that will expand our reach and deepen our impact.

We believe that the greatest change happens when we work together. Here, you will find early concepts for our next steps and opportunities for individuals, community groups, and organizations to collaborate with us in bringing these vital projects to life. Your partnership, in any form, is invaluable.

Our Fundamental Commitment: Why Health and Safety Pave the Way for Education

At Schools4Africa, our long-term vision is deeply rooted in empowering communities through education. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to learn, thrive, and build a brighter future. However, for the children in the remote villages we serve, the path to school is often blocked by a more immediate and severe threat: the absence of basic sanitation and clean drinking water. It’s an undeniable truth that a child cannot attend school if they are battling waterborne illnesses, or worse, if their life is cut short by preventable diseases stemming from contaminated environments. Our commitment to education must, therefore, begin with ensuring the fundamental health and safety of these children and their families. By addressing the critical need for toilets and clean water now, we are not diverting from our educational goals. We are laying the essential groundwork that allows children to survive, stay healthy, and ultimately, be present and ready to learn in the classroom. This initiative is a vital step in creating the stable, healthy communities where educational opportunities can truly flourish.

Building Toilets & Wells for At-Risk Villages in Sierra Leone

  • The Idea: We propose to launch a critical initiative to construct community latrines or toilets and clean water wells in highly vulnerable, flood-prone regions of Sierra Leone. This project directly addresses life-threatening public health risks exacerbated by annual rains and deforestation.
  • The Challenge & Urgency: In 2025, it’s unfathomable that hundreds of the villages we serve still lack basic sanitation and safe drinking water. These communities, often located on flat lands at the base of mountains or surrounded by hills, become collection points for floodwaters during August and September rains. With the widespread practice of open defecation in nearby bushes, these floodwaters tragically become conduits for human waste, sweeping it directly into homes and drinking sources. This creates an immediate and severe risk of cholera, typhoid, and other waterborne diseases – preventable disasters that devastate communities. Deforestation further escalates this danger by increasing runoff and flooding severely.
  • Our Solution: By providing durable accessible community latrines, we will eliminate open defecation preventing the spread of disease during the rainy season even if flooding occurs, and improving daily hygiene. Concurrently, drilling new, protected wells will ensure year-round access to safe, clean drinking water, severing another critical link in disease transmission.

Anticipated Impact:

  • Saving Lives: Drastically reduce incidences of cholera, typhoid, and other waterborne diseases.
  • Improving Health: Enhance overall community health, especially for vulnerable populations like children and the elderly.
  • Promoting Dignity: Provide safe, private sanitation facilities, restoring dignity and reducing risks for women and girls.
  • Empowering Communities: Shift understanding from supernatural causes of illness to practical, preventable solutions, empowering communities to take charge of their health.
  • Enabling Education: Create a healthier environment where children are not debilitated by preventable diseases, allowing them to attend school consistently and benefit from educational opportunities.

Call for Collaboration: We are actively seeking funding partners, engineering expertise, public health organizations, and passionate volunteers to help us bring this vital project to fruition. Our trusted partner, “Limba People na Salone,” a social and community action group of the Limba ethnic tribe, is ready to spearhead community mobilization, organization, and local oversight, ensuring sustainable impact.

Join Us: This is a monumental, life-saving effort. If your organization or an individual shares our commitment to fundamental human rights and public health, and is interested in partnering on this crucial initiative, please reach out to us via our contact form. Together, we can prevent these tragedies and build healthier, more resilient communities.
