“I know firsthand what it’s like to walk miles barefoot just to sit on a broken desk in a leaking classroom,” says Bangura. “No child should still face that today.”

Our Commitment to Transparency and Local Leadership

At Schools4Africa, we believe in a simple principle: to build a better future for a community, the community must be at the heart of the process. That’s why we’ve built a unique dual board structure that seamlessly combines robust U.S. oversight with direct, on-the-ground leadership in Sierra Leone. This tandem model is our promise to you that every dollar is used effectively, transparently, and with the full backing of the community it serves.

A Tandem Model for Trust and Impact

Our two boards work in perfect synchronization, ensuring that our mission is fulfilled with both integrity and efficiency. The U.S. Board focuses on the legal and financial foundation, while the Sierra Leone Board provides the local expertise and accountability needed to turn our vision into a reality. Donors can be confident that their contributions are safeguarded by a system designed for maximum impact and minimal risk.

The U.S. Board: Financial Integrity and Strategic Direction

The U.S.-based Board of Directors serves as the legal and financial backbone of Schools4Africa. Its primary role is to ensure the organization operates with the highest standards of integrity.

The U.S. Board’s responsibilities include:

  • Legal Compliance: Maintaining our 501(c)(3) status and adhering to all U.S. non-profit regulations.
  • Fundraising and Financial Management: Securing funding, managing the budget, and providing transparent financial reports to our donors and the public.
  • Strategic Oversight: Setting the long-term vision and overall strategic direction of the organization.

This board provides the assurance that all funds raised are handled responsibly and with full transparency.

The Sierra Leone Board: On-the-Ground Accountability and Community Ownership

The Sierra Leone Board of Trustees is the heart of our operations. Comprised of trusted community leaders and representatives from our partner organization, the Limba People na Salone group, this board provides the essential local expertise that no U.S. board could.

The Sierra Leone Board’s responsibilities include:

  • On-the-Ground Oversight: Directly supervising project implementation, from construction to materials production, to ensure every step is executed to our high standards.
  • Community Liaison: Acting as a vital bridge to the local communities, ensuring our projects reflects their needs and is embraced by them.
  • Preventing Corruption: Providing a direct check and balance on all local spending. This board is designed to ensure that every dollar is spent appropriately and that our resources are not diverted from their intended purpose.

This board embodies our belief in local empowerment, ensuring that our projects are owned and maintained by the very people who will benefit from them.

The Boards in Action

The U.S. Board provides the resources, and the Sierra Leone Board ensures those resources are used effectively and transparently on the ground. This partnership guarantees that every dollar you donate goes directly to rebuilding schools and empowering communities. Our dual board structure is more than just a governance model; it is our promise to you and to the people of Sierra Leone.
